Why Coughing Often Gets Worse at Night

Why Coughing Often Gets Worse at Night

You feel fine all evening, then the moment your head hits the pillow, the coughing starts. Night-time coughing is common, and there are several clear reasons for it.

1. Drainage pools when you lie down

Upright, mucus drains away naturally. Lying flat lets post-nasal drip collect at the back of the throat, triggering the cough reflex.

2. Dry bedroom air

Heating and air conditioning dry the air, which can irritate the throat and thicken mucus.

3. Reflux

Lying down makes it easier for stomach contents to reach the throat, especially after a late meal.

4. Allergens in the bedroom

Dust mites live in bedding and pillows, and pet dander builds up on soft furnishings. You're breathing close to both for hours.

5. Airway sensitivity

For some people, airway sensitivity is naturally higher at night. Night-time coughing and wheezing can also be a sign of asthma, which needs medical assessment.

Try tonight: raise your head, run a clean humidifier, avoid eating three hours before bed, wash bedding in hot water, and keep a glass of water by the bed.

When to see a doctor

If night-time coughing is regular, wakes you up, or comes with wheezing or breathlessness, see a doctor. A persistent night cough is worth investigating rather than enduring.
